History of Ontario County, New York, part 2

Ontario County’s early history is notable for its significant events and figures during critical periods such as the French and English War and the War of 1812-15. This history highlights the county’s strategic importance and its role in events of national significance, which, although not always acknowledged in general historical narratives, contribute to the rich tapestry of New York State’s past. Recognizing the voluminous nature of the original single volume, it has been thoughtfully divided into two parts for convenience and accessibility. Part 1 encompasses the historical and biographical narrative of Ontario County, laying the foundation for the genealogical treasures contained in Part 2, this volume. See: part 1.

The preparation of this volume is a result of nearly two decades of diligent research, during which a vast amount of information, including original documents and copies, was gathered. This effort underscores the importance of local histories in understanding the broader narratives of a region’s past. The acknowledgment section expresses gratitude towards the community’s support, which was crucial in making this publication possible, emphasizing the collaborative effort between historians, local citizens, and record keepers in preserving Ontario County’s history.

The index lists an extensive array of surnames, indicating the comprehensive nature of the genealogical section in Part 2. This list not only serves as a reference for individuals researching family histories but also reflects the diverse settler and immigrant populations that have contributed to the fabric of Ontario County. Each surname represents a family’s journey, struggles, and contributions to the county’s development over centuries.

This volume stands as a testament to the value of local histories in understanding the nuanced and multifaceted stories of communities across the United States. It offers a window into the lives of individuals and families who, while perhaps not widely recognized in national narratives, played essential roles in the development of their communities and the nation.
