The Storrs Family: Genealogical and Other Memoranda was compiled by Charles Storrs of Brooklyn, New York, who devoted over two decades to assembling genealogical information on his family. Born in Mansfield, Connecticut, on 24 January 1822, Storrs was a man of wide interests and deep convictions, with a strong reverence for ancestry. At the time of his death on 1 September 1884, the manuscript for this work was nearly complete and was subsequently published in 1886 according to his original plan.
This volume traces the American branch of the Storrs family beginning with Samuel Storrs, the immigrant ancestor from Sutton-cum-Lound, England, who settled in Mansfield, Connecticut. It follows his descendants—primarily through the male line—down to the late nineteenth century. The work also includes limited notes on the family’s English origins and accounts for those members whose lines moved westward or otherwise became disconnected from known relatives.
Storrs organized the genealogy by generational divisions and made careful distinctions using visual markers to separate family lines. Though he acknowledged the limitations of his data, especially in regard to some distant branches and the early English history, the book remains a substantial and methodical effort to document the lineage and migration patterns of one New England family over more than two centuries.
While not comprehensive, this work is a valuable resource for descendants and researchers of the Mansfield, Connecticut Storrs family. As with all genealogies, family researchers should validate on their own any stated facts found within the book. Use it as a guide, not as absolute proof.
