Bassett-Preston Ancestors

Miss Belle Preston, Mrs. Bassett’s sister, began work on her own ancestry about 1898, while living in Hinsdale, Illinois, using family papers, correspondence, and the Newberry Public Library of Chicago as references. In 1905 she moved to Brooklyn, and later, after her mother’s death, came to live with her sister. She then began to trace the family ancestry on the Bassett side, so that each descendant might possess a record of his American forebears. She carried on this research at intervals in a very busy and useful life, making especial use of the New York Public Library and the Long Island Historical Society library.

The Bassett-Preston ancestry is remarkable for the large number of New England colonial immigrants. This book shows eighty-nine Bassett ancestors in the ninth generation, counting back from my children, and one hundred and forty-five in the tenth. It shows ninety-two Preston ancestors in the ninth genera¬ tion, and one hundred and forty in the tenth. All lived in New England, and all were immigrants or the children of immigrants. All of the immigrant ancestors on both sides came to New England from the British Isles. The Bassetts have six Mayflower ancestors.

My wife, her sister and I probably know the New England environment of our two families more intimately than those who will follow us. I knew Elisha Bassett, for a long time clerk of the Federal District Court in Boston, and an indefatigable collector of family history, copies of whose records I possess. My brother, my sisters and I when children used often to make visits in Ashfield and neighboring towns, and we have kept in touch with our New England relatives. Similarly my wife and her sister used to go to the old farm in Chester, New Hampshire, and have known the relatives thereabout. This touch with New England relatives and their history cannot continue the same hereafter, because so many of those nearest have passed or will soon pass away.
