Ethan N. Spencer, who is engaged in the fish business in Concord, was born in the town of Barton, Vt., January 22, 1850, son of John C. and Mary (Knox) Spencer. John C. Spencer, the father of our subject, who was born in Peacham, Vt., removed from his native town to Barton, there bought a farm, and spent the remainder of his life occupied in its cultivation and improvement. Elizabeth Tantum Spencer was born near Jerseyville, Illinois, September 28, 1871. She attended the rural schools in Jersey County, Illinois, and Woodson County, Kansas, was graduated from the Yates Center High School (a member of the first class) in 1890, and from the Kansas State Normal at Emporia in 1894. She taught three years in the rural schools of Woodson County, during the first year riding fourteen miles each day. This volume, “Marriages of Charlotte County, Virginia, 1784-1815,” compiles the marriage bonds and minister’s returns from Charlotte County during the specified period. The original work was painstakingly copied by Catherine Lindsay Knorr and published in 1951. The book spans 119 pages and includes a wealth of historical data on marriages that took place in this Virginia county. This publication presents several challenges for readers. Some pages are slightly tattered and torn, and the manuscript features irregular pagination. Additionally, there are tight or nonexistent margins, particularly at the bottom of the pages, and one page is typed on different paper than the rest.
Death called two of the Grande Ronde valley’s foremost pioneer women during the weekend, when Mrs. Mary Spencer, 83, died Friday afternoon and Mrs. Mary Foley, 72, early Saturday morning. Each had been closely associated with, and helped make, the history of this country for 71 years, each having settled here in 1865. Long Illness Foreruns Demise Yesterday Funeral Held from Family Home This Afternoon at 2 O’clock Death yesterday ended a long and painful illness suffered by Joseph Spencer, a well-known citizen of North La Grande. Mr. Spencer was ill for several weeks. He was about 63 years of age at the time of his death and is survived by a widow and several grown children. James Spencer was born at Springfield, Vt., in May, 1819. He learned the blacksmith trade there, married Susan M. McCrae. and reared two children, J. H. and Susan A. The former is a blacksmith in Keene, and the latter is the wife of H. P. Ware and resides in Alstead. James came to Alstead about 1846 and was engaged in the blacksmith business here. He was a celebrated clarionet player and died February 18, 1883. His widow resides in Keene, aged sixty-three years.

Established around a mill operated by Sheshbazzar Bentley Sr. and Jr. on Pigeon Creek in 1816, the town grew to a population of 300 by 1868. The author traces the origins of Bentleysville back to the 1770s to document the earliest settlers, while also providing context through significant national events like the Whiskey Rebellion and the Civil War. Although Bentleysville’s history as a village ended before 1900, this work preserves its legacy for future generations.
