New Hampshire State Builders

State Builders: An Illustrated Historical and Biographical Record of the State of New Hampshire at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century was published in 1903 as a combined historical, institutional, and biographical survey of New Hampshire at the opening of the new century. Compiled and written by New Hampshire authors and editors, the volume presents a structured account of the stateโ€™s political, educational, industrial, commercial, agricultural, medical, ecclesiastical, and legal development, reflecting both the continuity of earlier traditions and the social and economic changes underway in the period.

In addition to topical chapters prepared by subject specialists, State Builders includes an extensive biographical section documenting the careers of notable men and women of New Hampshire. These sketches provide identifying details, professional histories, and public service records, forming a convenient reference for personal and civic history. The work was conceived as a New Hampshire undertaking and dedicated to those whose contributions shaped the modern state. Its value as a reference tool was recognized at the time of publication and has increased as a record of the stateโ€™s institutions and individuals at the turn of the twentieth century.
