For several centuries the chief habitation of the Bells was on the Scotch border, in both England and Scotland. From thence they migrated to all parts of the British Isles and, later, to all parts of the British Empire and America. Bells settled in North Ireland as early as 1658, and in the American colonies as early as 1620. In England, Scotland and Ireland the Bells were armour bearing.
