Jake Hearing Passes After Eighty Years Was Well Known in Local Community; Made and Held Friends by Sterling Character Jacob C. Hearing, lifelong resident of Oregon, passed away at the Law Hospital Thursday evening. March 2, at the ripe age of 80 years. Jake had suffered a stroke sometime Wednesday afternoon and was found by neighbors Thursday morning in critical condition. He was removed to the Law hospital at once, but the shock and exposure were more than his weakened condition could stand. Alma Hearing of 423 Sac Annex, died Wed., August 30th, at the local hospital at the age of 63 Mrs. Hearing was born September 10, 1888 at San Francisco, Calif. the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McCulloch. She moved with her family to Northeastern Oregon in 1889. On October 6, 1915 she was married to Merle V. Hearing at Enterprise. She lived most of her life in Wallowa and moved to La Grande in 1961. Sam Hearing 74, Native of Haines Sam L. Hearing, 74, of 1112 Washington St., Vernonia, former mayor and city recorder for the City of Vernonia, died Saturday in a Portland Hospital. Mr. Hearing was born and raised at Haines in Baker County. He was the youngest of 13 children of Sam P. and Susan Hearing. His grandparents came to Baker County at the time of the Civil War. Hearing, a lifelong resident of the Haines section, passed away early Monday morning at a La Grande Hospital following an operation.
