Enterprise Native Succumbs At Hospital.
Myrtle I. Hearing of Enterprise passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1975 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital following several months of ill health.
She was the daughter of pioneer parents, Nicholas and Mary Ownbey and was born in Enterprise on Aug. 25, 1890. She lived here until 1928 when she moved to Walla Walla, Wash., to live with a sister, Mrs. Ora Bookout. Later Mrs. Hearing, with her sister, moved to Portland where they made their home. After the death of her sister, she lived with a nephew, Don Bookout of Portland. Being in failing health, Mrs. Hearing came to Enterprise to be with her daughter, Oretta Clegg, and a younger sister, Alta McFetridge. She was a member of the Christian Church of Walla Walla.
After a three week stay in the hospital in November, Mrs. Hearing enjoyed being home with the grandchildren and great-grandson for Christmas festivities, highlighted by one grandson David, on Navy leave from Midway Island, being present.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Oretta) Clegg of Enterprise; two sisters, Mrs. John (Alta) McFetridge of Enterprise and Mrs. Elmer (Hattie) McFetridge of Salem; four grandchildren, Jim Clegg of Tigard, Ron and Debbie Clegg of Enterprise and Dave Clegg in the Navy; one great-grandson, Deron Clegg of Tigard; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were Friday at 2 p.m. at the Bollman Chapel with Rev. Joe Jewett officiating. Organist was Jeanette Powers and soloist was Clifford Collingsworth, who sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”.
Casket bearers were: Hoke, Ollis, Floyd, Kennedy, Delbert Pratt, Clifford Whitmore, Gordon Arnhart and Wayne Mcfetridge; and vault internment was in the Enterprise Cemetery.
