Dorothy “Dottie” Lillian McGowan Burnaugh, 96, died March 16, 2004, in Eureka, Calif. She was born Aug. 4, 1907, in Enterprise to Claude A. and Olive (Boswell) Lockwood.

While growing up in Enterprise, favorite childhood memories included entertaining the neighborhood by playing the piano with Orva and Bernice McFetridge on violin. She also won the Charleston dance contest in high school and played piano for the silent movies.

After high school she attended Oregon Agricultural College (now Eastern Oregon University) in La Grande to study music followed by a return to the Portland area to study to become a secretary. She moved to San Francisco and worked for the brokerage house E. A. Pierce, rising to the position of executive secretary for the resident partner after the firm became known as Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner and Bean, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She married coworker Terence Henry McGowan in 1934.

After a divorce, she married childhood friend Samuel Lyle Burnaugh in 1953 and returned to Portland. They teamed up playing music, golfing, fixing up and beautifying homes and thrilling others with outstanding artwork.

Survivors include a son, Ross McGowan; a daughter, Terry Sue Myers; four grandchildren Cynthia Myers, Kristin and husband Lance Downs, Jeffrey McGowan and Kipp McGowan; two great grandchildren Logan and Kelsey Downs; and a nephew, Gregory Lockwood.

Memorial services took place March 19, 2004 at her daughter’s home in Blue Lake, Calif. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Humboldt of Eureka, Calif.

Karlyn Sue (Adams) Burgess, 43, died peacefully at her home in Enterprise on Dec. 10. Karlyn was born March 24, 1961 in La Grande, to Ken and Betty (Witty) Adams. She grew up in Elgin graduating from Elgin High in 1979. She attended La Grande College of Business and graduated in 1981.

Karlyn married Scott Burgess in June 1993. She and Scott lived in various towns through out the northwest where she became involved in real estate. She was currently employed by Daggett and northwest where she became involved in real estate. She currently employed by Daggett and Assoc. GMAC Real Estate as a realtor.

Karlyn’s love of life and laughter brought energy to everyone she knew and loved. Her hobbies included horseback riding on her favorite paint horse “Cheeko”, camping, boating, yard sales and a good auction.

She is survived by husband Scott of Enterprise, son Kyle Stookey of Enterprise, daughter Kristin Cardoza and spouse Michael of La Grande, son Dustin Burgess and spouse Heather of La Grande and grandchild Shelby Ray-Ann, parent Ken and Betty Adams of La Grande, sister Kenna Jean and Jordan and spouse Mike of Lewiston, Idaho. Melynda Bean and spouse Dennis also of Lewiston, brother Larry Adams and partner Joan Stanley of Elgin many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of life was held Dec. 14 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Elgin with continued Celebration at the Elgin Community Center. Private Vault Interment at the Elgin Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers please make donations to Pan Can (Pancreatic Cancer) Research 2221 Rosecram Ave Suite 131 El Segundo, CA 90245.
