(III) D. Eddy, son of David Barnes, was born August 10, 1856, in the house in which he is residing at the present time, and which was erected in 1838, by David Barnes. He was educated in the public schools of Canandaigua and Geneva, New York, and during his earlier years assisted his father in the cultivation of the homestead farm, which later passed into his own possession. Barnes, George Washington – Obituary

George Washington Barnes was born Feb 13, 1843 in Jackson County, Indiana and died July 18, 1913 at the home of his son in law, Frank Redman, of Paradise, at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 5 days. He served in the U. S. Army during the Civil War having enlisted in 1863. He was honorably discharged and crossed the Plains in the fall of 1865, settleing at Cove, Oregon. The original work was painstakingly copied by Catherine Lindsay Knorr and published in 1951. The book spans 119 pages and includes a wealth of historical data on marriages that took place in this Virginia county. This publication presents several challenges for readers. Some pages are slightly tattered and torn, and the manuscript features irregular pagination. Additionally, there are tight or nonexistent margins, particularly at the bottom of the pages, and one page is typed on different paper than the rest.

La Grande, Oregon Roberta Moore Barnes, 64, died April 11 at her home in La Grande. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Grandview Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Roberta was born June 6, 1942, to Charles Edwin and Rita C. (Hazelwood) Moore in Pendleton. The great-granddaughter of Joseph Vey, she spent most of her life in the Pendleton and La Grande area. She married Daniel Barnes, and they had 15 years together until his untimely death in 1997. James Barnes, of Virginia, settled in Kentucky at an early date. He had three sons James, Jr., Noble, and John. The two latter settled in Illinois, where they lived and died. James, Jr., settled in Missouri. He married Sarah Callaway, daughter of Flanders Callaway, and they had twenty-two children, sixteen of whom lived to be grown, viz: James, John, Larkin, William, Callaway F., Flanders C., Lilborn, Volney, Andrew, Rhoda, Jemima, Minerva, Margaret, Hulda, Cynthia, and Elizabeth. Biographical Sketch of W. J. Barnes

W. J. Barnes, proprietor of Madison Hotel, is a native of Dutchess County, N. Y. In the spring of 1866, the family came to Columbus, Neb. The following year, they removed to Madison County, where he has since resided. The family are among the first 24 settlers of the county. His brother pre-empted this land and laid out this town. His father pre-empted a quarter section on the north. W. J. also pre-empted a quarter section, making about one section which the family entered. He has since been engaged in farming, and has recently opened this house.
