Fought at Ypres, Belgium July 12 to Sept. 16, 1918; Cambrai, St. Quentin offensive; Bellicourt from Sept. 29, 1918, to Oct. 19, 1918. Decorations G. O. No. 2, Hdq., 30th Div., A. E. F., Jan. 10, 1919, for valor during Cambrai and St. Quentin offensive. Did duty on Mexican border. Arrived in USA April 11, 1919, at Charleston, S. C. Mustered out at Camp Jackson, April 17, 1919.

Ed. H. Barnes, stock dealer, was born in St. Albans, N.Y.; moved to Manchester, Ia., in 1855; was their engaged in business for twelve years. He went to Waterloo, where he engaged in the hotel business; then went to Yankton, Dakota He built the telegraph line from there to Fort Sully. In 1871 he came to Ida County, Ia., and was elected sheriff in 1872.

The exact origin of the fire is somewhat indefinite; the one that visited Hinckley must have started in the region south of Mission Creek. Around this little village much of the pine had been cut. The aim of this history was to present in a permanent form the key incidents in the history of Minneapolis, from its earliest settlement to its publication in 1895. The primary facts and events recounted were mostly obtained from living witnesses and participants. It was rare for a city with more than two hundred thousand inhabitants to have so many of its first settlers still alive. The city’s growth had been so extraordinary and unprecedented that many of its earliest settlers remained. Some information was also gleaned from the notes left by now-deceased writers who witnessed the events described. Great care was taken to verify the accuracy of all facts and incidents mentioned. While it might have been too much to hope that the work was entirely free from errors, it was confidently believed that any such errors were few and insignificant.

Biographical Sketch of W. J. Barnes

W. J. Barnes, proprietor of Madison Hotel, is a native of Dutchess County, N. Y. In the spring of 1866, the family came to Columbus, Neb. The following year, they removed to Madison County, where he has since resided. The family are among the first 24 settlers of the county. His brother pre-empted this land and laid out this town. His father pre-empted a quarter section on the north. W. J. also pre-empted a quarter section, making about one section which the family entered. He has since been engaged in farming, and has recently opened this house.

(II) David, son of James Barnes, was an infant in his mother’s arms when he came with his parents to Geneva in 1798, he being’ the youngest son of a large family of children. His early life was spent on the old homestead farm, and later on a farm now (1910) owned by his son, D. Eddy Barnes, engaged in its cultivation, and he died there, in 1871. He served for a time as a colonel in the New York State Militia.
