1834 Cherokee Muster Roll

This is a muster roll for the Cherokee Indians who emigrated West of the Mississippi in 1834 with Lt. J. A. Harris as the conductor. Unlike other Cherokee muster rolls these citizens of the Cherokee tribe traveled West before the 1835 Henderson Roll could be taken. If you can’t find your ancestor on the Henderson Roll you should check this list!

I am not certain when in the process of travel this muster roll was recorded. Was it at the beginning, middle, or end? Because of this I cannot confirm that all these individuals arrived safely in Indian Territory. The only names recorded on these rolls were the 216 Heads of Families, and as can be seen below, they did not always accompany members of their family on the trip. There were a total of 903 individuals who arrived with this group, or were added before rations were distributed. Some members arrived West but seeing the conditions returned East of the Mississippi, like the family of John and Eliza Ward.

Births and deaths occurred along the route and after arrival. Samuel Lattimore had 5 individuals in his family group die, James Henson had a birth along the route.

Unless noted in remarks, each family was supplied with Corn, Beef, Salt in kind.
