Biographical Sketch of Cephas Sheldon

Cephas Sheldon, born in Bernardston, Massachusetts, in 1754, served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War with Captain Amasa Sheldon’s company from July to August 1777 and with Captain Joseph Sheldon’s company from September to October 1777. After the war, he relocated to Vermont, where he was recorded in the 1790 federal census living in Rochester with his family. Later, he moved to Waterbury, Vermont, where he joined his sister, Persis Sheldon Allen, and is listed among revolutionary veterans who settled in the area.

Richard had four sons: Erastus, Charles, William R., and David F. William R., known for his adventurous spirit, worked as a train pilot over the plains to California and later served as a city policeman in Sacramento.

Charles Sheldon was born on March 16, 1813, in Waterbury, Vermont, and later moved to Phelps, Ontario County, after a brief stint in Illinois where he acquired and sold land. He spent the remainder of his life farming in Phelps, where he was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and served as Sunday school superintendent. He married Sarah Crittenden, and together they had six children: Jane, Augusta, Cassius, Mary, Adelaide, and Florence.
