John Safford, from Bennington, Vt., came to Cambridge in 1790, and located in the western part of the town, upon the farm now owned by his grandson, Samuel M. He reared a family of ten children, eight of whom settled in the town, and died, in 1857, aged ninety-two years.
John Safford was born 16 Aug 1765 in Bennington, VT. He was the son of Gen. Samuel Safford (1737-1813) and Mary Lawrence (1741-1821) of Bennington. On 5 Aug 1792 he married at Cambridge, VT to Elizabeth Montague, daughter of Samuel Montague and Lucy Safford, sister of Gen. Safford. He was one of the first surveyors in Cambridge and was also a teacher and farmer.
