Baker City, Oregon

Monty D. “Mont” Nelson, 40, of Baker City, died May 16, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

His funeral was today at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. The Rev. Robert C. Irwin of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral presided at the service. Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Monty was born on March 16, 1962, at Baker City. He spent his first 18 years in Baker City, where he attended St. Francis Academy and the public schools. He graduated from Baker High School in 1980. He lived in the Portland-Gresham-Salem area for 20 years. For the past 1 years, he lived in Baker City, the place he always called “home.”

During his younger years, Monty enjoyed the outdoors. He was eager and enthusiastic when it came to hunting and fishing. He was also a good athlete, competing in Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, and also basketball and baseball at the high school level.

An active and fulfilled life following high school was not to be, as he was then diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and later, Parkinsonism. Nevertheless, he continued with a strong and sincere belief in God, a deep concern and love for his family, a love of music and playing his guitar, and a good sense of humor.

Survivors include his mother, Juantia Carnell; father and mother, Ron and Edie Nelson; sisters, Rene and her husband, Ed Kress, and Shelly and her husband, Robert Horn, and stepsister Shelly Sprague; uncles and aunts, Glenn and Donna Nelson, Donald and Tina Nelson, Carmen and Keith Harrison, and Tom and Michelle Wellington; two nieces, Megan and Kaylan; and numerous cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Alliance for Mentally Ill. This may be done through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.
