Hammack, Stella May – Obituary

Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon

Stella May Hammack, 96, of Pendleton, died Jan. 13, 2003. She was born March 08, 1906, in Cold Springs to Augustus and Eliza Thompson Stumbaugh.

Mrs. Hammack grew up in the Asotin and Imnaha areas. She and her mother often acted as house sitters for homesteaders along the Snake River and as a teenager she worked as a cook in sheep camps and on cattle ranches. In 1927, she married William Hammack of Enterprise, after which they made their home in Wallowa and later moved to Weston.

Mrs. Hammack enjoyed sightseeing, going on picnics, reading, spending time with family and friends, and reminiscing about earlier years.

She is survived by her daughters, Maxine Prince and Myrna Chavez, both of Pendleton; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; two brothers, Alfred and Henry Stumbaugh, and a great-grandchild.

Graveside services were held Jan. 16 at the Enterprise Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society.
