Donel “Jick” Courtney died Oct. 10, 2005 at his home in Lostine of a long-term illness. He was 79.
The son of Donel Eugene and Margaret Sara Courtney of Enterprise, Mr. Courtney was born on Oct. 21, 1925. He returned home from the Marines after World War II, got married, started a family and then moved to the Lostine River Valley area to start ranching. He later moved to Oregon City to work on a small farm raising sheep, and he also worked as a mail carrier. His mail carrying job then took him to Portland. After 30 years with the Post Office, Mr. Courtney and his longtime companion Mary White retired to the Lostine River area so he could enjoy the area he loved so much.
Mr. Courtney enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and hiking, especially the Wallowa Mountains. He loved being outdoors and sharing the beauty with his family.
Mr. Courtney was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard of Spokane, Wash., and his daughter Jill of Oregon City. He survived by his longtime companion Mary White of Lostine, brother and sister-in-law Mick and Sharon Courtney of Enterprise, son and daughter-in-law Donel and Nelima Courtney of Milwaukie, son and daughter-in-law Tyler and Kelly Courtney of Oregon City, and daughter and son-in-law Diana and Bob Barney of Lostine, also his seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Nov. 12 at noon at the Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise. A luncheon will be served at the VFW Hall from 1-3 p.m. for family and friends.

Donel Steel “Jick” Courtney, 79, of Lostine died Oct. 10 at his home. The funeral will begin at noon Saturday Nov. 12 at the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise. A luncheon reception from 1 to 3 p.m. will follow at the VFW hall.
Mr. Courtney was born Oct. 21, 1925, to Donel Eugene and Margaret Sara Steel Courtney of Enterprise. He served in the Marines during World War II and kept a ranch on the Lostine River. Later he worked for the Post Office in Oregon City and the Portland area. After 30 years he retired, and with his longtime companion, Mary White, moved to Lostine.
He enjoyed the mountains, especially North Minam Meadows, visiting, helping others, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping.
Survivors include is companion of Lostine; a brother and sister-in-law, Mick and Sharon Courtney of Enterprise; children and their spouses, Donel “Roger” and Nelima Courtney of Milwaukee, Tyler and Kelly Courtney of Oregon City, and Diana and Bob Barney of Lostine; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A brother, Richard Courtney, and a daughter, Jill Courtney, died earlier.
