Fred C. Bean, a life-long resident of Lane County, died suddenly last evening at his home on 579 Ninth Avenue East, at 8:15 o’clock, at the age of 52 years. He had been in poor health for some time but had retired early last night in apparently the usual condition. Soon he began to suffer and as no relief could be administered, it was only a short time until he passed away. Mr. Bean is the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Bean who are well-known pioneers of Oregon having come here in the early ’50s. He was born on a farm three miles south of Junction City and has lived in various sections of the county since.
He was an early settler of the Siuslaw country locating at Mapleton in 1886 and conducting a store there for several years. He moved to Eugene with his family about 15 years ago and was for some time in the hardware business with F. J. Berger. For some time before his death he was in the taxi cab business here.
Mr. Bean is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Mae Hammitt, and two children, Hortense who is a student at Mount Angel College and Rupert. There are also six brothers who survive the deceased, R. S. Bean, judge of the federal court in Portland; J. Riley Bean, express agent of the Northern Pacific in Portland; Dr. J. W. Bean of Ventura, Cal.; Edward A. Bean of Seattle, Wash.; Louis Bean, an attorney of this city; and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Lucas, of Aberdeen, Wash., and Miss Estelle Bean of Ventura, Cal.
