The History of New Boston, New Hampshire, prepared by Rev. Elliott Colby Cogswell and published in 1864, originated from the town’s decision to mark its Centennial with a permanent historical record. During the celebration of July 4, 1863, returning residents voted to produce a comprehensive volume that would preserve the day’s proceedings and document the broader history of the community. A subscription fund was created to support the project, and Rev. Cogswell was appointed to collect, organize, and prepare the material for publication. Although many individuals contributed addresses, recollections, and research, the responsibility for assembling the manuscript and filling gaps in the historical narrative rested with him. The work brings together the Centennial exercises, the town’s civil and ecclesiastical history, accounts of schools and local institutions, sketches of early settlers, and genealogical and biographical notices. It also incorporates illustrations and views furnished by residents for the benefit of future readers (you). The volume reflects the effort of townspeople to preserve the origins, development, and character of New Boston as understood at the close of its first century.
