Dove, Herman E.; automobile business; born, Port Huron, Mich., Dec. 14, 1875; son of James H. and Winifred Dove; educated Alpena, Mich., High School; married, Lansing, Mich., Feb. 28, 1906, Ursula E. Ackerman; corporal Company B, 33rd Mich. Volunteers; service in Cuba in 1898; five and one-half years in clothing business in Alpena, Mich.; started as errand boy and left as head salesman; was called out from there for service in the Spanish-American War; in October, 1899, left the clothing business, engaging in the manufacture of sugar with the Bay City Sugar Co.; in this business until 1908, removing from Bay City to Lansing in 1901, to take a position with the Lansing Sugar Co., later known as The Owosso Sugar Co.; as the sugar business did not offer a large field for advancement, went with the Buick Automobile Co. of Flint, Mich.; still connected with the company as mngr. Cleveland Branch; during the automobile panic of 1910, resided in Salt Lake City, taking charge of the Randall-Dodd Co.; handled their business for 15 months, putting it on a safe and sane basis, and it still exists as a prosperous distributing agency; returned to Flint, Mich., in October 1911, and from there came to Cleveland, taking the management of the Cleveland branch of the Buick Motor Car Co.; Mason, Knights of Pythias and Y. M. C. A. affiliations, member Automobile and Business Men’s Club of the Y. M. C. A. Recreations: Hunting, Fishing and General Out-Door Sports.
