Anna Scott, born in Dove City, South Carolina, in 1846, was an ex-slave who later joined one of the first groups of African American colonizers to West Africa after emancipation. Raised on a plantation, she had a close bond with her mistress, who allowed her to practice religion, albeit with restrictions. Following emancipation, Anna experienced a transition that included travel to Charleston and eventually to Africa, where her stepfather established a successful business. After eight challenging years abroad, she returned to America, married, and settled in Jacksonville, Florida.
Alonzo F. Dove, a prominent figure in Hamilton, Kansas, was born on December 11, 1873, into a pioneering family from Greenwood County. He initially pursued a career in education, teaching for thirteen years before transitioning to the loan and insurance business. In 1915, he became the postmaster of Hamilton. Dove’s lineage includes English ancestry, with roots tracing back to colonial Virginia. He married Rosina Belle Proeger in 1905, and they had three children. Besides his civic duties, he was involved in various local enterprises and community organizations.
Herman E. Dove, born on December 14, 1875, in Port Huron, Michigan, began his career in the clothing business before serving as a corporal in the Spanish-American War. He transitioned to sugar manufacturing, working with the Bay City and Lansing Sugar Companies, and eventually joined Buick Automobile Co. in Flint, Michigan. During the 1910 automobile panic, he managed the Randall-Dodd Co. in Salt Lake City before returning to lead Buick’s Cleveland branch. Dove was involved in various organizations and enjoyed outdoor activities.
Larry Allan Dove, 58, of Baker City, passed away on May 25, 2005. Born on October 27, 1946, in Orofino, Idaho, he was a Vietnam War veteran and worked in the logging industry. A skilled mechanic, he took pride in his family, including his daughter, Lacey, and son, Ervin. Larry was actively involved in the community and enjoyed shuffleboard and spending time with his dogs. He is remembered for his generosity and mentorship to many. His funeral services are scheduled for June 18 in Kamiah, Idaho.
