Funeral services for Edward O. Neill, who died at St. Anthony’s hospital in Pendleton Sunday, were held Tuesday with Interment in the Heppner, Masonic cemetery. Mr. Neill was born February 19, 1881 at Hartville, Mo., and came west as a young man. For many years he operated a sheep ranch in the Butter Creek section and at the time of his death he was a guard at the Hermiston ordnance depot. At his residence on Birch Creek, Nov. 20th [1884], William Lee. Funeral at the house today at 11 a.m. William was born April 26, 1839 in Bartholomew Co., IN. He married Amy Lee on February 21, 1858 in Mahaska Co., Fremont, IA. Amy was only 15 and William was 19 years old when they married. In 1862 they came west to Oregon. Amy and William moved to Pendleton in 1869. Lee’s Crossing was named after William Lee. It is rather shocking that only a one line obituary was written. Mrs. Bowman, formerly Eugenia Ellenberger [adopted name] was born in Berne, Switzerland, and first came to Umatilla County when she was 13, living in Pilot Rock with her mother the last Mrs. Fritz Ellenberger. Archie E. Low, well-known young man of Union, who served some time with the A. E. F. in France, died at his home in Union Saturday night, after a long illness. Mr. Low was gassed while overseas, and never regained his health. He came home to Union last summer, but upon the advice of physicians went to Seattle and entered the government hospital there. CAPT. WILLIAM MARTIN. – Captain Martin, of the first real immigration, that of 1843, is still living in a hale age at Pendleton, Oregon. He was born in West Virginia in 1822, and came west to Missouri in 1841. In 1843 he joined a company coming to Oregon, being intimately associated with Daniel Waldo. Reaching Oregon after the vicissitudes of that eventful march, he took up a claim at Howell’s Prairie, working for Waldo at ten dollars per month, although wages were sixty dollars. Clinton S. Daggett of Joseph died Jan. 15, 2006 at Willow Brook Terrace in Pendleton of natural causes. He was 89. Mr. Daggett was born in Joseph to Charles Walter and Lida Blanche Holmes Daggett. He married Patricia Irene Masturde in Vancouver, Wash., on April 12, 1939. She died in 1980. He spent his working life as a millwright. Evelyn Mae Bowman of 515 SE Byers Ave. died at St. Anthony Hospital Wednesday [June 6, 1973], one day after the death of her husband, former Pendleton Mayor Hugh Bowman. Mrs. Bowman was 73. She was born April 30, 1900, at Longmont, Colo. She had lived in Pendleton 50 years. Survivors are a niece, Mrs. Chet Kirkman, San Francisco; a grandniece, Mrs. Mark Eckenrode, Los Angeles; and several other nieces and grandnieces and nephews in California.
