Joseph Benoit and Charles Van Clay discovered gold in Rye Valley in the spring of 1863 and laid a claim on the waters of Dixie creek and begun digging a ditch. They went over to Mormon Basin and offered Mr. Ingraham an interest in their discovery which he declined, thinking he had a better prospect in the Basin. Fred Schreek, 88, of Haines, a lifelong Baker County resident, died March 26, 2009. His funeral was Monday. Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army in February of 1941 at the age of 21. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. He proudly served in the 4th Armored Division and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in action in the 25th Cavalry Reconnaissance. Haines, Baker County, Oregon Oren George, age 25 years son of Elmer George, died at the St. Elizabeth hospital in Baker early Thursday morning following an illness of several days with pneumonia.
