John F. West Died Sunday At La Grande
John F. West, well known resident of this city, died at the La Grande hospital last Sunday morning, Dec. 2. He had suffered for some time with sarcoma, and had but recently been taken back to the hospital.
The deceased was born Nov. 5, 1857, in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents emigrated to Kansas when he was a child and he was left an orphan at 7 years of age, together with several brothers and sisters. At the age of 10 years, he traveled to Colorado and made his own way from that time. In 1884, in Colorado, he married Mary Baxter, and went to Portland. There two of his children died, and at Walla Walla, where he moved to from Portland, he lost his wife, and a seventeen year old daughter.
Later he returned to Portland and from there in 1914, he came with Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Belfield to North Powder and made his home here until his illness and death.
Burial took place in the La Grande cemetery, and the services were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Monday, Mrs. Ella Belfield and Mrs. Chas. Waltz and others who knew him well. Friends of the deceased say he was liked by all acquaintances and made many true friends, all of whom will miss him. He leaves no known relatives, his brothers and sisters either having passed on before or their residence is not known.
