Singer, Carl Henry – Obituary

Carl Henry Singer, 88, of 130 Bryant Ave., No. 22, Walla Walla, Wash., died April 4, 2006, at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash.

Funeral service was held at Groseclose Funeral home at 315 W. Alder St. at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2006.

The Rev. Albert Gillin of First Presbyterian Church officiated. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery, 2120 S. Second Ave.

Memorial contributions may be made to Walla Walla Senior Center through the funeral home.
Mr. Singer was born Nov. 22, 1917, in Boise, Idaho, to Henry and Carrie Chandler Singer. He graduated from Baker, Ore., High School in 1938. He married Madge Brown on Sept. 1, 1940, in Baker.

He was employed by Baker Packing Co. as a meat cutter until 1960, and later worked for Safeway. In 1962, he went into business with his nephew Duane Estes, and purchased The Cut Rate Market in Baker. He sold his half of the business in 1966 and moved to Burns, Ore., where he worked for Tiller’s Grocery Store. The couple moved to Walla Walla in 1968, and he worked as a meat cutter for Fleenor’s Quality Stores until retiring in 1984. Mrs. Singer died in 2005.

Mr. Singer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Forresters I.O.F., the Walla Walla Senior Center and a lifetime member of Walla Walla Elks 287. He enjoyed walking, gardening, camping and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, William and Lorreta Singer, Gary Singer, and Robert and Wanda Singer, all of Walla Walla, and Richard Singer of Vancouver, Wash.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two infant great-grandchildren.
