A number of years ago this author was researching information for a local history book. During that time she encountered numerous names that were members of her family heritage. That heritage went back in time in that same local area over a hundred years ago. Four of her family lines which came to Shelby County, Illinois are discussed in this volume. The Social Security Death Index provides birth date, death date, last known residence, and where the last payment was sent for persons who received benefits from the Social Security Administration. Approximately 98% of the people in this index died after 1962; the earliest date died in 1937. Those who held social security numbers but did not receive benefits or whose death was not reported to the administration, will not be listed. This index will help you pinpoint the date an ancestor died or at least narrow it to a month and year, making it easier to obtain the right death certificate from a county or state record office.

J. Montgomery Seaver began to publish manuscripts in the 1920’s on what he called the 100 most prominent names in America. In actuality, they were simply 100 of the most common names, and the whole series was part of a scam in which Jesse was eventually charged by Postal Inspectors. While Jesse over emphasized the benefits of his manuscripts, he did in fact provide some relevant information. The following manuscript is part of the Bell Family History published by Jesse in 1924. In it you will find short genealogies on many British and early American Bell families.
Our Georgia Marriage Collection provides marriage records from specific Georgia counties up until the year 1850 (except for Pulaski, which goes through 1930). Some are inclusive and cover all of the years from the start of record keeping in the county, while others have breaks in the data. The reasons for the breaks in the data can be a loss of records at the county level, an error during the initial transcription, or just a lack of marriage events during that period in time.

Letterbooks of William Henry Lyttleton 1756-1760: This collection contains papers relating to William Henry Lyttelton’s career as governor of South Carolina, including letters from officials in London; correspondence with other southern governors relating to Indian affairs, frontier defense, and boundaries; correspondence with military officers in America; and communications with the South Carolina Commons House and Council. A series of reports by Edmond Atkin, superintendent of Indian affairs in the Southern District, provides valuable information on the Cherokees, Creeks, and Chickasaws. There are 142 items, 1761-1766, concerning Lyttelton’s governorship of Jamaica, including material on the Negro insurrection of 1765 in St. Mary’s Parish.
