HON. WILLIAM SAVAGE. – This pioneer of 1845, one of the most successful men of Polk county, was born at Mexico, New York, in 1826. He was left an orphan at the age of five, and when sixteen went to Ohio, and three years later joined Colonel Taylor’s party for Oregon. His first work was taking the Colonel’s stock by water – the Ohio and Missouri rivers – to St. Louis, and driving them thence to Independence. The town of Taunton, which included within its original boundaries the neighboring village of Berkley, has been the home of a branch of the Sanford family for about two hundred years. This Berkley-Taunton branch of the family, in the line of Capt. Joseph Sanford, an active patriot of the Revolution, has been more or less eminent in professional life. Four of the sons of Capt. Joseph Sanford were college graduates and ministers of the gospel; and several of their posterity have followed the learned professions. One of the grandsons of Capt. Joseph was the late Hon. John Elliott Sanford, of Taunton, lawyer, legislator, railroad commissioner, etc., who at the time of his death was characterized by the local paper as Taunton’s “first citizen.”

Mrs. J.L. (Taylor) Savage Dies At Haines Mrs. J.L. Savage, a pioneer of 1852 died Sunday at her home four and a half miles west of Haines. She was born September, 1849, in Illinois, and came to Oregon with her parents, crossing the plains with an ox team. Her parents settled near Harrisburg in the Willamette valley, the fall of 1852, and she was a resident of Baker county for 52 years. The Fall River French family here considered springs from the early Rehoboth family of the name, and it, as will be observed further on, according to Savage, perhaps from the Dorchester family. John French, the head of the Dorchester family and the immigrant ancestor, was a native of England, born in 1612. He had land granted him at what became Braintree for five heads Feb. 24, 1639-40. He was admitted to the church in the adjoining town of Dorchester, Jan. 27, 1642, and the births of his first two children are recorded in Dorchester. He became a freeman May 29, 1639. He was active and prominent among the early settlers. His son John was born Feb. 28, 1641.

Funeral services for Carl Dean Savage, former Haines resident who died at his home in Yreka, California July 21, were held here Sunday. Burial was in the Haines Cemetery with West and company of Baker in charge. Mr. Savage was born in Lane county, Oregon, March 30, 1871. He came to Baker county with his parents when he was an infant.
