John Richardson Bronson, M.D., born June 5, 1829, in Middlebury, Connecticut, was a distinguished physician in southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, residing in Attleboro for over fifty years. The Bronson lineage traces back to early New England settlers, including John Bronson, a soldier in the Pequot War. Dr. Bronson, who graduated from Berkshire Medical College in 1852, served as a field surgeon during the Civil War and remained engaged in community affairs until his death on May 9, 1900. He married Catherine Wheelock and had five children.
The Macy family, rooted in Nantucket, traces its American origins to Thomas Macy, a freeman in 1639, who settled in Newbury, Massachusetts. Prominent in New Bedford’s business landscape, his descendants, including Frederick Macy, established a successful blacksmithing enterprise. Frederick, born in 1835, contributed significantly to the local fire department, leading it for many years. He married twice and had several children, continuing the family legacy of community involvement in New Bedford. The Macy lineage reflects a rich history of entrepreneurship and civic service.
William Watkins, a significant figure in New Bedford’s commercial landscape, was known for his integrity and community contributions. He descended from an English William Watkins who immigrated during the Revolutionary War. Capt. Thomas Watkins, a master mariner and his father, paved the way for William, who ventured into the ship chandlery and iron trade in 1840 and thrived until 1878. A trusted banker and trustee, he served prominently in several financial institutions. Married to Melissa M. Kollock, they had three children. William passed away in 1900, leaving a lasting legacy.
Noble Parker Swift, born September 5, 1830, in Sagamore, Massachusetts, was the last of a prominent lineage of Cape Cod cattle dealers and butchers. Engaging early in his family’s meat business, he expanded into cranberry culture, becoming a notable landowner. A man of integrity and conservative principles, he never sought political office but was respected in local affairs. Swift married Sarah Elizabeth Hallett and had three children. He passed away on July 15, 1911, leaving a legacy intertwined with the development of the meat packing industry.
Being a history of the descendants of Richard Dexter of Malden, Massachusetts, from the notes of John Haven Dexter and original researches. Richard Dexter, who was admitted an inhabitant of Boston (New England), Feb. 28, 1642, came from within ten miles of the town of Slane, Co. Meath, Ireland, and belonged to a branch of that family of Dexter who were descendants of Richard de Excester, the Lord Justice of Ireland. He, with his wife Bridget, and three or more children, fled to England from the great Irish Massacre of the Protestants which commenced Oct. 27, 1641. When Richard Dexter and family left England and by what vessel, we are unable to state, but he could not have remained there long, as we know he was living at Boston prior to Feb. 28, 1642.
Samuel Wakefield and Mary Burbank settled in Steuben, Maine, around 1756. After Mary’s death, Samuel married a widow named Small and had three children: James, Myriam, and Daniel. Their descendants include many notable figures, such as Cyrus Wakefield and Lydia, who married Ichabod Godfrey, yielding numerous offspring. A comprehensive lineage follows, listing marriages and children across multiple generations, showcasing the extensive family network established by the Wakefields in Narraguagus Valley.

James Smith, pioneer, was born in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, in 1737. When he was eighteen years of age he was captured by the Indians, was adopted into one of their tribes, and lived with them as one of themselves until his escape in 1759. He became a lieutenant under General Bouquet during the expedition against the Ohio Indians in 1764, and was captain of a company of rangers in Lord Dunmore’s War. In 1775 he was promoted to major of militia. He served in the Pennsylvania convention in 1776, and in the assembly in 1776-77. In the latter year he was commissioned colonel in command on the frontiers, and performed distinguished services. Smith moved to Kentucky in 1788. He was a member of the Danville convention, and represented Bourbon county for many years in the legislature. He died in Washington county, Kentucky, in 1812. The following narrative of his experience as member of an Indian tribe is from his own book entitled “Remarkable Adventures in the Life and Travels of Colonel James Smith,” printed at Lexington, Kentucky, in 1799. It affords a striking contrast to the terrible experiences of the other captives whose stories are republished in this book; for he was well treated, and stayed so long with his red captors that he acquired expert knowledge of their arts and customs, and deep insight into their character.
W. L. Handy, originally from Albany, Missouri, moved to Blair in 1872 and worked for Reordan Kerney for five years. He later established W. L. Handy Co. after acquiring C. A. Meyers Co. in 1877. In January 1880, he moved to Oakland, worked for Blanchard Latta for a year, and then purchased the business, which he has operated since March 12, 1881. Handy’s hardware business generates approximately $17,000 annually.
D. W. Handy, born in 1826 in Barren County, Kentucky, is the son of Robert A. and Rosana Handy. In 1865, he moved to Daviess County, Missouri, where he farmed before transitioning to mercantile ventures in Bancroft and later Salem. Active in farming and stock dealing since 1879, Handy recently sold a 500-acre farm and is considering returning to retail. Elected trustee and treasurer of Salem Township in 1881, he has been a Baptist Church member for 22 years. He married Mary J. Cook in 1848 and has seven surviving children.
George H. Handy, born on February 20, 1871, in Nebraska, served as the probate judge and ex-officio superintendent of schools for Owyhee County, Idaho, residing in Silver City. With a background in civil engineering and prior experience in banking and clerical roles, he was elected to his judicial position in 1896 and re-elected in 1898 due to his exemplary service. Handy was married to Sarah Brooks in 1897, and he actively contributed to his community, particularly through the Episcopal Church and local organizations.
Edward C. Handy, born on July 7, 1865, in Hancock County, Indiana, has been a significant figure in Anderson’s dairy industry as treasurer and general manager of the Indiana Ice Dairy Company for over fifteen years. Under his leadership, the company has expanded its operations, producing pasteurized milk, cream, and butter to serve a growing customer base. Handy’s extensive experience in the dairy business began in 1891, and he has played a crucial role in the company’s success since its incorporation in 1907.
