Alachua County, located in north-central Florida, is bounded on the north by Bradford and Union Counties; on the east by Putnam and Marion Counties; on the south by Marion and Levy Counties; and on the west by Gilchrist and Levy Counties. It lies between approximately 29º 20′ and 29º 50′ north latitude, and between 82º and 82º 30′ west longitude. The county stretches about 40 miles from north to south and about 35 miles from east to west. It contains an area of approximately 969 square miles, or 620,160 acres.

The county’s geography includes the Santa Fe River, numerous freshwater springs, and karst limestone features, which influenced historic transportation and settlement routes. Alachua County was formed from parts of St. Johns and Duval Counties and later contributed land to form several other counties, making it important to check parent and neighboring counties for early genealogical records.

History of Alachua County Florida

Alachua County, Florida, established in 1824, was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, particularly the Potano tribe, prior to European contact and later displacement. Spanish explorers traversed the area in the 16th century, and it became part of Spanish Florida until the U.S. acquired the territory in 1821. Early settlement by Americans began shortly thereafter, with Newnansville serving as the county seat until Gainesville was designated in 1854.
