La Grande, Oregon George Edward Evans, 86, of La Grande, died Thursday at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the Summerville Cemetery. Mr. Evans was born on Dec. 10, 1919 in Bartlett, Neb., to Charles Sydney and Grace Lorenz Evans. He moved to La Grande at the age of 8 with his family and graduated from La Grande High School. These marriage records were abstracted from unbound marriage bonds and licenses in the Liberty County Courthouse, Hinesville, Georgia. The names were copied as they were spelled on the bonds, often barely legible and often spelled differently on the same bond. Sometimes the marriages were performed before the licenses were issued. The first date given in the abstracts is the date of the license or bond; the second is the date of marriage. The following abbreviations are used in these abstracts with the meaning indicated:

S. in 1854, and crossed the plains with a mule-team in 1860, to Colorado, where he mined and farmed until May 1863, when he followed the immigration to Montana. Elgin, Union County, Oregon Former Resident Of Elgin Dies Elgin (Special) Word was received by relatives here of the death of Mrs. Cora Evans, aged 59, of Portland on September 18. Her death was the result of a major operation following a long illness. Survivors are: Mrs. Lela Hockett of New Orleans, Lous., and her husband, H. M. Evans. Up to 1851, the immense uninhabited plains east of the Rocky Mountains were admitted to be Indian Territory, and numerous tribes roamed from Texas and Mexico to the Northern boundary of the United States. Then came the discovery of gold in California, drawing a tide of emigration across this wide reservation, and it became necessary, by treaty with the Indians, to secure a broad highway to the Pacific shore. By these treaties the Indians were restricted to certain limits, but with the privilege of ranging, for hunting purposes, over the belt thus re-reserved as a route of travel.
John P. Evans, 74, farmer in the Missouri flat section for the last 47 years, died at the St. Elizabeth hospital at 11 o’clock Friday night after an illness of several months. Mr. Evans was born in Howard County, Indiana, November 25, 1853 and moved to Missouri when he was a boy. He married Miss Elizabeth Colley in 1874 and moved with his family to Baker county in 1880.
