Last Rites Held For Sam Evans

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the chapel at Enterprise for Samuel Wesley Evans, who was born in Nebraska in 1878 and passed away at his home in Wallowa April 26, 1946. He came west as a young man and settled in the Flora country, where on Nov. 20, 1904, he was united in marriage with Mary Elva Dale.

To this union six children were born. One died at birth, and Ethel Evans Martin is also deceased. Surviving besides the widow are the following daughters: Mrs. Dora Boss of Wallowa, Mrs. Delpha Gallagher of Dale, Mrs. Lovina Poole of Wallowa and Mrs. Verda Ferguson of Arko.

Also surviving are two brothers, Charles of Flora and John of Vancouver; three sisters: Mrs. Susan Briggs and Mrs. Ellen Smalley of La Grande and Mrs. Martha Doran of Pendleton; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Evans spent most of his life at Flora, until a year ago when they moved to Wallowa.

Rev., E.L. Beem of the Christian church conducted the funeral service, and Mrs. Garnet Best and Gwen Coffin sang “The Old rugged cross” and “Sometime We’ll Understand.” Pall bearers were Eddie McCall of Flora, Albert Wilson of Paradise. O.E. Bodmer and A. I. Gosch of Enterprise, and Harry Swihser and Jack Cole of Lostine. Burial was at Wallowa.
