Eliza I. Steen Dies At Hot Lake
Eliza Izora Steen, who had lived in Wallowa County most of her life, passed away Sunday, April 7, 1974 at Hot lake following an illness of several months.
She was the daughter of Henry and Angeline Zumwalt and was born Sept. 10, 1889 at Terrydale, near Madras. As a small child she came to Wallowa County with her family who homesteaded in the Zumwalt area. On Sept. 6, 1910 she was married at Imnaha to Thomas J. Williams who preceded her in death in 1960. In 1962 she was married to Bill Steen who also preceded her in death.
Survivors include seven sons, Leonard Williams, Grass Valley, Calif., Earl Williams, La Grande, Merle Williams, Portland, Gail Williams, Union, Fred Williams, Wallowa, Lyle Williams, La Grande, and Hallie Williams, Ontario; two daughters, Nellie Doud, North Powder, and Jessie Hescock, Eugene; one sister, Josie Hays, Enterprise; One brother, Lynn (Shorty) Zumwalt, Winlock, Wash.; 30 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. One son, Chester Williams, preceded her in death in 1972.
Memorial services were held yesterday (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. at the Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel in La Grande with the Rev. Paul. O. Jewell of the United Methodist Church officiating.
Concluding services followed at 3:30 p.m. at the Bramlet Memorial Cemetery near Wallowa.
