Marshall, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Hafenbrack Cody Mrs. – Obituary

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Cody-Marshall died July 8, 2007, at Baker City.

Her memorial service will be from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. at the Foster Farm at Eagle Creek. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Estacada.

Mrs. Cody-Marshall was born on Sept. 17, 1916, at Seattle to Naunerl Elizabeth Hill and Gustav Martin Hafenbrack. She lived in many areas of the Northwest and was a 1935 Astoria High School graduate.

She attended Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University) at Monmouth, where she met Robert Edward “Bob” Cody. She later earned a bachelor’s degree.

She married Bob Cody on June 14, 1941, at Portland. He died on Aug. 3, 1981, at Ilwaco, Wash.
The couple lived at St. Helens and Schenectady, N.Y., and settled at Estacada in 1948.

Mrs. Cody-Marshall taught first, third and fourth grades at Eagle Creek Elementary School. She was an avid reader and collected historic artifacts, ephemera and photographs of Estacada and Eagle Creek.

She was a founding member of the Jacknife-Zion-Horseheaven (JZH) Historical Society, dedicated to the preservation of area history including the Philip Foster Farm National Historic site in Eagle Creek. She was a member of the Estacada Garden Club, the United Methodist Church, Oregon Historical Society, Portland Art Museum and Audubon Society of Portland.

She enjoyed gardening, her book club, playing bridge and world travel.

She married Robert Darcy “Bob” Marshall in September 1996 at Baker City where they made their home. He died on Dec. 26, 2006.

Survivors include one brother, James Hafenbrack of Colorado; one son and daughter-in-law, Robin and Donna Cody of Portland; three daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Jane Cody of Welches, Sue Cody of Astoria and Betsy Cody and James Hess of Arlington, Va.; five grandchildren, Heidi Cody of Brooklyn, N.Y., Leslie Duling of Botswana, Africa, Brooke Duling of Astoria, and Rachel Elizabeth and Nathaniel Cody Hess of Arlington; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jacknife-Zion-Horseheaven (JZH) Historical Society, P.O. Box 1040, Estacada, OR 97023.
