Farmer, 49 Years

Death on Saturday afternoon claimed Benjamin E. Jacobs, pioneer Baker county rancher and first master of the Wingville grange. He had been visiting at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Claudia J. Merritt of Ontario.

Mr. Jacobs was born in Helena, N.Y. June 21, 1859, came to the county in 1879 [1897?], mined near McEwan briefly and then took up farming three miles west of this city where he has resided for 49 years.

He was married in 1884 to Bessie A. Hartzell in Butte. She preceded him in death by several years.

He has held life membership in the Grange since the Wingville subordinate was chartered January 1, 1925.

Survivors are his daughter, a granddaughter Mrs. Barbara Crowell and two [great] grandsons, all of Ontario, and a grandson George H. Baldwin of Merrill, Ore.

Rev. Sydney A. Walker read funeral services Tuesday at West’s chapel, graveside services being conducted at Mt. Hope cemetery by the Grange. Acting as pallbearers were B. Stover Crabill, George Carson, Ed Mason, Lynn Sieg, Truscott Irby and Roy Anderson. Mrs Pearl Sieg sang during the services.
