John Chase

3. JOHN5 CHASE (Moses4, Daniel3, Moses2, Aquilla1) was b. Oct. 4, 1753. He purchased and occupied a large farm on the hill south of the Flat, where he, like his brother, Daniel, built a large two-story square-roofed house. Here he spent his life chiefly in farming. He also built and operated a sawmill and gristmill, and for a time a distillery where cider brandy was made, then a legitimate business. He was a dea. of the Congregational Church, upright and honorable in all his dealings. He m. first, -, Martha Cotton, who d. -.March 21, 1789; m. second. , Louisa Joslyn, who d. June 15, 1849. He d. Dec. 14, 1844. Children by Martha Cotton:

iii. JUDITH, b. Feb. 6, 1787; m. -, Rev. Williams, a missionary to the Indians. No children. She d. about 1810.

iv. MARTHA JOSLYN, b. Dec. 4, 1791; m. Oct. 21, 1816, Moody March Hall. She had four children. (See Hall.) She d. Dec. 7, 1869.
v. MELISSA, b. Feb. 13, 1793; m. first, July 30, 1817, Paul Davidson, by whom she had three sons (see Davidson); m. second, Jan. 31, 1826, Jonathan Wyman. No issue. She d. March 2. 1886.
vi. JOHN, JR., b. Sept. 25, 1794; m. -, Achsa Whitney.
vii. LoUISA, b. May 25, 1796; m. Oct. 8, 1822, Joseph K. Johnson of Plainfield.
viii. SUSAN, b. Jan. 20, 1795; m. Oct. 29, 1821, William L. Sweet, who d. June 22, 1890. Shed. March 14, 1879. 12. ix. MOSES, b. Dec. 20, 1799.
x. TAYLOR GILMAN, b. Nov. 4, 1801; m. first, Oct. 23, 1828, Ursula, dau. of David and Betsey (Pollard) Nevens, b. Sept. 21, 1802, and d. Nov. 19, 1829; m. second, Sept. 26, 1831, Emily Spaulding of Plainfield, dau. of Waterman and Betsey (Stevens) Spaulding. They rem. to Brighton, Ill., in 1838.
xi. HANNAH B., b. April 22, 1803; m. Nov. 4, 1841, Abel Jackson of Cornish. One son: Charles A. (See Jackson.) Shed. Aug. 28, 1894.
