Pioneer, Passes; Burial Thursday
James S Burford, 76 year old pioneer of Union County, died this morning (June 25, 1935) at the Grande Ronde hospital after a short illness. (He was born February 19, 1859 per funeral card).
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church at Cove with Rev. Smits in charge of the services. Burial will take place at the family plot in the Cove Cemetery. Friends may view the body at the chapel of Walters Funeral Home.
Mr. Burford crossed the plains to Oregon at the age of 17 years and has been a resident of Cove the last 53 years. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Cove.
Survivors include six sons; William, Orphia, Frank, and Archie, all of Union: Arthur of Sandpoint, Ida., and Claude Burford, of Salem and six daughters; Mrs. Vivian Mytinger of Pendleton; Mrs. Hazel Hartley of Cove; Mrs. Ruth Cockrell of Union; Mrs. Bina Vann and Mrs. Opal Gassett, of Cove, and Mrs. Leitha Parr of Everett, Wash.
James Samuel Burford, son of Preston Williamson Burford and Elizabeth Ann Hornbeck, was born in near Stockton, Cedar Co, MO 02-19-1859. James died 06-25-1935 in La Grande, Union Co, Oregon, at 76 years of age. – Margaret.
