Adair County IA

Adair County, Iowa, was established in 1851 and formally organized in 1854, with land originally part of Pottawattamie County. Settlement began in the early 1850s, primarily by migrants from Ohio, Indiana, and other Midwestern states. The county is situated in southwestern Iowa and is traversed by the Middle Nodaway River and the South Raccoon River, both significant for early agriculture and settlement. Key transportation routes include the historical Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and later U.S. Highway 6 and Interstate 80. Greenfield, the county seat, was platted in 1856 and has housed the county courthouse since 1895. Land records and probate files date from the county’s formation in 1854, while federal census records are available from 1860 onward. The region was once part of the territory inhabited by the Ioway, Otoe, and Sioux tribes before cession treaties in the early 19th century.
