Andrews, Earl J.; architect and builder; born, Wilmington, O., Nov. 16, 1882; son of William Garner and Rachel Seal Andrews; educated, Marion, Ind., high school and Marion Normal & Science College; married, Canton, O., April 10, 1904, Birdette Wertenberger; learned carpenter’s trade in Cleveland during summer vacations and in 1903 finished trade and took up drawing and de-signing at the same time following practical building work; in 1905 started in business for myself; was the first Cleveland architect to dispense with sub-contractors and employ my own labor and material, thus eliminating annoyance to clients in dealing with a great number of men; have built 60 high grade houses in the neighborhood of Wade Park ranging from $8,000.00 to $30,000.00, in the last six years; high grade homes are my specialty and I make that class of work a study for the comfort of the owners down to the servants. Business blocks, factories and apartments are entirely out of my line. I have never once failed to deliver a home complete upon the specified time; the whole secret of this is the absolute command of all trades during construction; member Chamber of Commerce, Builder’s Exchange, Al Koran Temple Mystic Shrine, Cour De Leon Commandery; member Athletic, Automobile, Country and Manufacturer’s Clubs; recreation, howling in winter months and baseball fan (33rd’), and some golf; my parents were natives of Ohio; my father was raised on a farm; in 1892 he moved to Marion, Ind., and engaged in the hay and grain shipping business; my father retired from business two years ago and bought back his old homestead farm in Clinton Co.; I have a brother in Marion, Ind., who is a mechanical engineer; I own a 60-acre farm south of Columbus, about 50 miles; have given it some attention in the summer months, but think I shall sell or rent to a more practical farmer.
