Canniff, W. H.; railroad business; born, Litchfield, Mich., Oct. 22, 1847; business career, entered railway service in 1863; until 1865 was night watchman on the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana R. R., at Osseo, Mich.; February 1865, to August 1868, was agt. of the same road at Trenton, Mich.; August 1868, to August 1872, joint agt. of The Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana, and Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Railways, at Salem Crossing, Ind.; August 1872, to December 1879, trackmaster of the Kendallville Division of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern R. R.; December 1879, to November 1880, trackmaster of the Chicago Division; November 1880, to November 1889, supt. of the Lansing Division, including Detroit, Hillsdale & Southwestern and Ft. Wayne & Jackson railroads, November 1889 to January 1892, asst. general supt.; January 1892, to March 1896, gen. supt.; March 1896, to May, 1898, gen. mgr., all on the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern R. R., May, 1898, up to the present time, pres. of The New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Co., at Cleveland; member Chamber of Commerce, Union, Clifton, Roadside and Country Clubs, of Cleveland, and Chicago Traffic Club and Chicago Association of Commerce.
