John Cristy, from New Hampshire, came here in 1825, and located in the northern part of the town, where he resided until his death, in 1868, aged seventy-eight years. Robert C., the second of his six children, born in 1827, now resides here. He has held most of the town trusts.

Biography of Zina Goldthwait Chase

Zina Goldthwait Chase late of Cambridge, son of Alden and Abigail (Chase) Chase, was born in Cambridge, August 9, 1830. His educational advantages were derived from the common schools and he steadily followed farming as an occupation, at the same time dealing largely in cattle. Mr. Chase twice enlisted in the ranks of his country’s defenders and in his first attempt was advanced to the grade of orderly sergeant [p.71] of Co. H, 2d Regt. Vt. Uriah Wilkins, born at Amherst, N. H., married Nancy Kitridge, of that town, and at an early day immigrated to Stowe, where he reared a family of eight children, as follows : Uriah, Nancy, George, Fanny K., Charles A., Elizabeth W., Ingalls, and Mary E. Uriah resides in Stowe, a retired farmer. Nancy died of consumption. George is a practicing attorney of this town. Fanny K. is the wife of Nathaniel Robinson. Charles A. resides in Milford, N. H. Biography of Martin Shattuck

Martin Shattuck, son of Randall and Mary Ann (Thomas) Shattuck, Randall being the youngest son of Moody, was born in this town in Feb. 5, 1842. Mr. Shattuck received his intellectual training at the common schools of Belvidere, but his practical education was derived from hard labor upon his father’s farm where he remained till he was twenty-two years of age, when he entered his cousin’s store at Waterville as clerk. Biography of Jonas T. Stevens

Stevens, Jonas T., of Hyde Park, son of Amasa and Martha (Smith) Stevens, was born in Eden, June 3, 1842. His father, Amasa, was a long-time resident of Eden, was prominently connected with public affairs, and for a considerable period was associate judge of the county court. Jonas T. Stevens obtained his education in the common school, and for a time gave his services to neighboring farmers, being also employed in mills in the vicinity of his birthplace. Waite, Horace, of Hyde Park, son of Smith H. and Lucinda (Goodenough) Waite, was born in Fairfield, May 16, 1826. His education was obtained in the common schools of Sheldon and at Bakersfield Academy. Left an orphan at the age of five he found a home with Asa Grant with whom he remained till he arrived at man’s estate and for whom he worked seven years after attaining his majority. McFarland, Henry Moses, of Hyde Park, son of Moses and Livonia (Leach) McFarland, was born in Waterville, August 5, 1852. Mr. McFarland’s great-grandfather served in the war of the Revolution, coming out of the service with the rank of major. His father also served his country in the civil war as captain of Co. Edward Bertrand Sawyer of Hyde Park, son of Joshua and Mary (Keeler) Sawyer, was born in Hyde Park, April 16, 1828. His education was obtained in public and private schools, to some extent under the care of a tutor, and during one term at the People’s Academy. His father was his first instructor in the law, the study of which he commenced at eighteen years of age, reading also in the office of Hon. W. W. White, then of Johnson. Curtis Brown of Belvidere, son of Lybeout and Betsey W. (Ward) Brown, was born in Coventry, Oct. 16, 1825. His father was the first Republican representative in the Legislature of the state, to which both his son and grandson have been elected. Mr. Brown was educated in the common schools of Coventry and afterwards at Waterbury, N. Y., residing with his parents till the age of twenty-one. Carroll Smalley Page of Hyde Park, son of Russell S. and Martha Malvina (Smalley) Page, was born in Westfield, Jan. 10, 1843. He was educated at the People’s Academy at Morrisville, the Lamoille county grammar school of Johnson, and the Lamoille Central Academy of Hyde Park. Biographical Sketches of Benjamin Calkins

Benjamin Calkins, from Norwich, Conn., came to this town in 1798, and located upon the farm now owned by Barney G. Rooney, on road 46, where he resided until his death. Andrew H., son of Benjamin, born here in 1809, married Christina Whitcomb, and reared a family of six children, three of whom are now living. He died March 17, 1851. His wife survived him until August 4, 1874. Byron A., son of Andrew, born on the old farm in 1844, is now engaged in mercantile pursuits at Morrisville.

Biographical Sketch Seth Olmstead

Seth Olmstead, from Norwalk, Conn., came to Elmore in 1790, and located upon the farm now owned by his grandson, Samuel N. Olmstead, on road 25, where he built and kept the first hotel in the town, opening the same in 1813, Harry, son of Seth, born in this town, died here in 1854, aged sixty-two years. Samuel N. is the only one of his ten children now living in the town.

Biographical Sketch of Zephaniah Leach

The Leache are the descendants of a McLeach family, of Scotland. Three brothers McLeach came to this country. from the Highlands of Scotland about 250 years ago, and settled at Cold Run, Mass. They afterwards removed to Westmoreland, N. H., where, nearly 125 years since, the name was changed, on petition to Parliament, from McLeach to Leach. One of these brothers, Josiah McLeach, whose wife was Sarah Brittain, of Wales, was the grandfather of Zephaniah Leach, the early settler of Waterville.

Biographical Sketch of Zebina Luce

Zebina Luce came to Stowe at an early day, and located near where O. J. Benson now lives, and afterwards moved to the farm owned by Lysander Barrows, where he resided until his death. His son, Byron, born here, resides on road 42.

Biographical Sketch of Zadock Smith

Zadock Smith came to this town in 1855, and located upon the farm now known as the ” Malvern place.” He died November 30 1881. Allen B., son of Zadock, came here with his father. He was assistant judge of the county court in 1874-’76, and has been a selectman several years. He married Roxana P. Jackson and has two children.

Biographical Sketch of Zachariah Whiting

Zachariah Whiting, from Francestown, N. H., came to Johnson at an early date, and located on road 12, where his son, Almon, is now living. He had a family of eight children. Zachariah, Jr., born in 1827, still resides in the town, on road 19.
