David Kinkade, Aged Civil War Veteran Passes Away Today. Death Leaves Only One Remaining Member Of G.A.R. Post In Ellensburg. Came To Kittitas Valley In 1882; Has Lived In Retirement For Past 32 Years. David Kinkade, 88-year-old Civil War veteran and pioneer of the Kittitas Valley passed away this morning [August 13, 1931] at his resident at 401 East Fourth Street.
He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, August 11, 1843, and was the son of James W. and Margaret Kinkade. In 1862, while residing in Illinois, he enlisted in the Union Army and served three years as a private of John C. Anderson’s Company B, Seventh Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was a member of the David Ford Post No. 11, Department of Washington and Alaska, Grand Army of the Republic, and at the time of his death was serving as commander of the post. He was also a past commander. J. C. Goodwin, Ellensburg, is now the only member of the post.
In 1865, he was married to Sarah Sliger in Hancock County, Illinois. He came west to California in 1875 and remained there until 1882, when he came to the Kittitas Valley. He farmed here for awhile, but for the past 32 years he has been living in retirement at his residence in town.
He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, two sons, and three daughters. They are J. W. Kinkade and R. M. Kinkade of Ellensburg, and Mrs. W. C. Wright of Ellensburg, Mrs. John Nordie of Troy, Montana, and Mrs. James Bailes of Hoquiam. There are also eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
No funeral arrangements have yet been made. [David was buried in the IOOF Cemetery].
