Edwin J. Briggs passed away on October 2, 2001. He was born in Perry, Oregon on August 23, 1912, the son of Willie J. and Harriet Watson Briggs, both deceased now. He was raised in LaGrande, Oregon, and it was at college there that he met and married his first wife, Helen Teed. They were married 56 years. Helen died in 1990. Ed entered active military service in September, 1940 as a 2nd Lt. with Co. E., 186th Infantry Regiment, 41st Division. He served in New Guinea during the first Papuan Campaign. O’Farrell, Daniel – Obituary

Daniel O’Farrell, a resident of the State of Washington for the last 43 years, died Monday morning [March 2, 1914] at 4 o’clock in the Puyallup Hospital. He was 79 years old and was well known throughout the state. Mr. O’Farrell was born in Ireland. In 1870 he came to Washington, settling in the Puyallup valley at the junction of the Puyallup and Stuck rivers. O’Farrell, Margaret – Obituary

Mrs. Margaret O’Farrell, aged 56 years, died at one of the city hospitals last evening [March 7, 1904]. She had been a well-known resident of Orting, coming there from Australia with her husband 34 years ago. A husband and five sons and a daughter survive her. The cause of her death was cancer, from which she had been suffering for more than a year. The funeral arrangements are not yet complete. Contributed by: Shelli Steedman

Owen E. O’Farrell, 74, Rt. 13, Box 650, died at his home Sunday. O’Farrell, a grocer, had lived in Pierce County all his life, having been born at Orting. He was a member of the St. John of the Woods Church and the Clover Creek Grange. Mrs. Charles L. (Helen M.) Hart, 74 of 6810 South J St., died Monday [September 10, 1979]. Mrs. Hart was born in Ontario, Canada, and had lived in Tacoma since 1930. Fix, Samuel Edgar – Obituary

Samuel Edgar Fix, 80, who came to Orting in 1890 and who later built the Kapowsin School and the Eatonville gymnasium, died Tuesday [April 3, 1951] at a Puyallup Hospital. He was born in Minnesota, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Fix. His father was a Civil War veteran. S. E. Fix attended schools in Minnesota and Orting, then went to Alaska in 1901, engaging in placer mining for two years. He returned to Kapowsin in 1903 to work in various sawmills. Phillip W. Fix was born in Decatur County, Indiana, in 1835, and died at his home in Orting, January 16, 1924, aged 89. Mr. Fix was a Civil War veteran, having enlisted in Co. “A” Fourth Minnesota Regular Volunteer Infantry in 1861 for three years. He re-enlisted at Huntsville, Alabama in the winter of 1864 and served until the close of the war when he was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, on the 26th of July, 1865. Mrs. Janet Harmon, 416 South L Street, died in a local hospital Friday [October 5]. She was born in Scotland and was a pioneer resident of Tacoma. Mrs. Harmon was a member of the first Tacoma Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and belonged to the Holy Communion Church. Jay C. Scanlan, 80, of the State Soldiers Home in Orting, died in a Puyallup nursing home Tuesday [April 1, 1969] following a long illness. He was born in Minnesota and lived in Western Washington most of his life. He was a retired carpenter and a veteran of World War I and had been a resident of the State Soldiers Home for the past 10 years.
