The exact origin of the fire is somewhat indefinite; the one that visited Hinckley must have started in the region south of Mission Creek. Around this little village much of the pine had been cut. There was in the hamlet twenty-six houses, a schoolhouse, a small sawmill a general store, hotel and blacksmith shop. At the time of the fire there were seventy-three people living in, and adjacent to, this village; a great number of the population were away from home, having gone to Dakota for the harvest. June Lucille Grant Brown, 82, loving wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died April 7, 2002, at Portneuf Valley Nursing Home in Pocatello, Idaho. A celebration of her life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. MDT at the Century Ward Chapel on Fourth and Fredregill in Pocatello. Alfred Nelson came to Georgia from Virginia in 1825 and settled near Perry. He married Pauline Jenkins of Houston County. She was a refined, educated woman, and very wealthy. Alfred Nelson raised cattle and was a large land and slave owner. He was uneducated, but was intensely interested in education and all worthy causes. The people of Houston County admired and respected him. Twelve children were born to them, eight of whom were boys, who served in the War Between the States. One was killed. Calvin E. Nelson, a former resident of Union, died at Mineral City, Idaho, last Monday evening after a short illness. He was employed at the smelting works at Mineral City and his death is attributed to the inhalation of poisonous gases while at work. The body was brought to Union yesterday morning and the funeral took place this morning at 11 o’clock, Rev. S.M. Driver, of the Methodist church, officiating.
