Dr. J. Homer McCall, born April 2, 1859, in Illinois, was a respected physician and surgeon in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. He was educated at the Osage mission and later studied medicine at Ann Arbor, graduating in 1889. McCall practiced in Kansas City before serving as a surgeon for the Eighth Cavalry in Fort Gibson from 1897. He was active in public affairs as mayor and sought various political offices. McCall managed local farms and was involved in community health and education, earning considerable respect throughout his career.

McCall, Bonnie Jean – Obituary

Bonnie Jean McCall, aged 81, passed away on July 16 in Enterprise. Born to Volley and Louisa Hammack Ward, she married Elmo Shuman in 1942 and later Delbert McCall in 1949, with whom she had a ranch at Flora. A devoted homemaker and gardener, she was active in the North End Community Club. After Delbert’s death in 1986, she relocated to town. She is survived by two daughters and grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Friday at Enterprise Cemetery.

McCall, John – Obituary

John McCall, a prominent early settler in the county, passed away suddenly at his home in Island City on Monday afternoon. He had been engaged in his usual business activities before falling ill. Despite the efforts of Dr. Militor from La Grande, he was unable to recover and died around 4 p.m. McCall was well-regarded by many long-time residents. His funeral took place in Island City on Wednesday.

McCall, Matt E. – Obituary

Matt Eugene McCall, aged 88, passed away on August 13 at the Valley View Manor in La Grande, following an extended illness. His funeral service took place on August 16 at the Elgin Nazarene Church, led by Rev. Marvin Miller, with burial in Elgin cemetery. A lifelong resident of Elgin and retired mill and timber worker, McCall is survived by his grandson, a sister, a niece, and two nephews. Arrangements were managed by Dempseys Funeral Chapel.

Biography of John Marshall McCall

John Marshall McCall, born on January 15, 1825, in Pennsylvania, was a significant figure in Southern Oregon’s development. A pioneer, he moved to Iowa in 1840 and later traveled to Oregon, where he worked a mining claim in Jackson County. During the 1855-56 Indian War, he defended his community and later served in the Civil War as a lieutenant and then captain. McCall contributed to local industry by establishing the Ashland Woolen Mills and a mercantile business, and he served in the state legislature. He had two marriages and three children.
