Died: Miss Frances Rebecca Fisher, Monday, May 23, 1910, at the home of her sister and only near relative, Mrs. M. D. Lee, of troubles incident to old age. Born in Allensville, Ind., Sept. 13, 1845, Miss Fisher came to Harper County twenty two years ago. She taught school in the county for thirteen years, four in the Hopewell School, one in Bluff City and the rest in Anthony. Vera K. Fisher died Feb. 14, 1990, at the Wallowa County Nursing Home in Enterprise. She was born Nov. 21, 1895, at LaGrande, the daughter of Judson W. and Frances (Baldwin) Draper. On June 21, 1913, she married James E. Fisher in Enterprise. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1959. As a young girl, attending school in Lostine, she won the state spelling bee contest. Being a history of the descendants of Richard Dexter of Malden, Massachusetts, from the notes of John Haven Dexter and original researches. Richard Dexter, who was admitted an inhabitant of Boston (New England), Feb. 28, 1642, came from within ten miles of the town of Slane, Co. Meath, Ireland, and belonged to a branch of that family of Dexter who were descendants of Richard de Excester, the Lord Justice of Ireland. He, with his wife Bridget, and three or more children, fled to England from the great Irish Massacre of the Protestants which commenced Oct. 27, 1641. When Richard Dexter and family left England and by what vessel, we are unable to state, but he could not have remained there long, as we know he was living at Boston prior to Feb. 28, 1642.

Biographical Sketch of Solomon Fisher

Solomon Fisher, of Virginia, married Mary A. Petty, by whom he had-Adam, George, William, John, Solomon, Jr., Eunice, Maxmillian, Parthena, Selemer, and Emmarilla. All of the family came on a keel-boat to Louisiana, Missouri. Adam married Dulcinea Powers, of Virginia, and settled in Pike County, in 1824. They had Mary A., Sally, William P., and Joseph. William P. married and lives in Montgomery County. George Fisher died in California, and Solomon died in the United States army. Mr. Adam Fisher laid off the town of Frankford, in Pike County.

The Treaty of January 17, 1837, was an agreement where the Choctaw tribe allowed the Chickasaws to create a district within Choctaw territory, known as the Chickasaw District of the Choctaw Nation. Amidst U.S. expansion policies like the Indian Removal Act, the treaty gave the Chickasaws autonomy and equal representation in the Choctaw council, excluding some financial rights. Boundaries for their district were defined, and the Chickasaws agreed to pay the Choctaws $530,000, with partial immediate payment and the remainder invested under U.S. supervision. Disputes would be settled by the Choctaw agent or ultimately the U.S. President. The treaty, signed in Doaksville, exemplifies Native American resilience and inter-tribal cooperation during forced negotiations due to American expansionism.
