This volume, “Marriages of Charlotte County, Virginia, 1784-1815,” compiles the marriage bonds and minister’s returns from Charlotte County during the specified period. The original work was painstakingly copied by Catherine Lindsay Knorr and published in 1951. The book spans 119 pages and includes a wealth of historical data on marriages that took place in this Virginia county. This publication presents several challenges for readers. Some pages are slightly tattered and torn, and the manuscript features irregular pagination. Additionally, there are tight or nonexistent margins, particularly at the bottom of the pages, and one page is typed on different paper than the rest.

George H. Ferguson, 91, died at Haven House Monday. He was born April 30, 1882 in the Nanum district, son of James Ferguson and Elizabeth McEwen Ferguson. He was married to Marie Wright, Feb. 11, 1936 at Ellensburg and has farmed just east of Ellensburg since 1910. He is survived by his wife, Marie, three daughters, Mrs. Thelma (John) Maxson of Bellevue, Mrs. Phyllis (Clifford) Gage of Ellensburg, and Mrs. Sandra (Gary) Reppe of Fountain Valley, California; and one step son, Ace Gage of Ellensburg, seven grandchildren; a brother, Ben Ferguson of Ellensburg; and a sister Mrs. Bessie Phelps of … Read more

George Mitchell Hooper

The Hooper family, to which belonged the late George Mitchell Hooper, one of Bridgewater’s well-known citizens, is an old and distinguished one in New England. George Mitchell Hooper, son of Mitchell, was born in the town of Bridgewater Sept. 1, 1838. He received his education in the public schools and Bridgewater Academy, later attending Peirce Academy and the State normal school at Bridgewater, graduating from the latter institution in 1857. After leaving school he engaged in teaching, a profession he followed for one year and then began the manufacture of brick with his father, a business in which he engaged for half a century. He was also a surveyor. He was identified with the banking interests of Bridgewater, having been one of the trustees of the Bridgewater Savings Bank, also filling the office of clerk. He was clerk and treasurer of the Bridgewater Cemetery Association; a member of the Plymouth County Agricultural Association, of which for years he was treasurer, and was secretary; and trustee of the Memorial Public Library. He died July 2, 1909, in his seventy-first year. On Oct. 16, 1861, Mr. Hooper was married to Mary E. Josselyn, who was born at Hanson, Mass., daughter of Hervey and Elizabeth (Howland) Josselyn. She died Jan. 30, 1884, and was buried in Mount Prospect cemetery. Eight children were born of this marriage.

Obituary of John Gilbert “Jack” Ferguson

John Gilbert “Jack” Ferguson (1916-2008) of Halfway, Oregon, passed away on June 12, 2008, at age 92. Born on March 11, 1916, in Akeley, Minnesota, to Benjamin Franklin and Minnie Belle Jenkins Ferguson, Jack moved to Renton, California, during the Great Depression. He graduated from Renton High School in 1936 and married Eleanor Owen on February 8, 1941. Jack served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, flying 19 missions over Japan. After the war, he operated Pine Mercantile Inc. in Halfway until retirement. Jack is survived by his wife, three children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Military honors were held on June 20, 2008, at Pine Haven Cemetery.

Henry and Eliza Jane (Anspach) Ferguson moved to Silver Creek Township in 1874. They purchased their land several years before the railroad was built through this area and trains went through in October 1877. They bought railroad lands for $6 per acre. There were no doctors or banks in Ida County then. Before the railroad came through Ida Grove, they did their trading at the nearest railroad points at Storm Lake or Denison, hauling the materials by team.
