Allen, Charles Herbert, son of Otis and Louisa (Bixby) Allen, was born in Lowell, Middlesex County, April 15, 1848. One of the most conspicuous figures in the financial and civic life of Southern Kansas was removed with the death of Edward Payson Allen at his home in Independence, November 27, 1915. He had already passed the age of three score and ten and with many ripe achievements to his credit and with the honorable associations of a long and useful life he went to his reward. 1st Class Private, Headquarters, 322nd Infantry, 81st Div. Born in Martin County; the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Allen. Entered service at Williamston, N.C., Sept. 20, 1917. Was sent to Camp Jackson, S. C., and from there to Camp Sevier, S. C. Transferred to Camp Upton, N. Y. Sailed for Liverpool, Eng., and later La Havre, Aug. 11, 1918. Fought at St. Die, Verdun Sector. Returned to USA June 18, 1919. Landed at Newport News, Va. Was mustered out at Camp Lee, Va., June 25, 1919.

Henry Justin Allen of Wichita had achieved a position among Kansas’ leading newspaper editors and publishers. He began as a newspaper reporter, was editor and owner at different times of various papers in the state, and is now proprietor of the Wichita Beacon. It was fifteen years after the admission of Vermont into the Federal Union, and forty years after the settlement of the town, before Norwich had a post office. The first post office was established at Norwich Plain, July 1, 1805, and Jacob Burton was appointed postmaster. Postmaster Burton kept the office in his harness shop on the main street of the village, nearly opposite the present residence of Mrs. William E. Lewis.
