John Wesley Carper, 49, of Promise died Dec. 10. A celebration of life and potluck will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the IOOF hall in Wallowa.
Mr. Carper was born March 8, 1955, to John Edgar and Linda Juhola Carper in La Grande. He graduated from high school in Alsea where he was a member of the state champion football team. He had a ranch in Wallowa County and worked at Rogge’s Mill, where he received awards as a lumber grader.
He enjoyed hunting, gathering mushrooms and rocks, and loved the history of the Promise area.
Survivors include siblings, Elaine Wright, Alan Crawford and Robert Huotari. His parents and a brother, Russell Crawford, died earlier.

John Wesley Carper, 48, passed away on Dec. 10, 2004, in Promise. John
was born on March 8, 1955, in La Grande.
He attended several schools in Oregon and graduated from Alsea High School, where he was a member of the state champion football team. In Wallowa County he was a rancher and worked at Rogge’s Mill, where he received awards as one of the best lumber graders in the area.
He had a wide variety of outdoor interests, including hunting, mushrooming and rock hounding. He loved, and was very knowledgeable about the Promise area.
John was preceded in death by his father John Edgar Carper, his mother Linda Juhola-Carper, and his brother Russell Crawford. He is survived by his sister Elaine Wright and his brothers Alan Crawford and Robert Huotari.
Memorial services were held Dec. 16 at the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Hall in Wallowa. His family wishes to thank everyone for their help and support.
