Morehead, Bruce – Obituary

Bruce Morehead, of 2911 N. Ash, La Grande, died Wednesday, August 29, 1984 at the Grande Ronde Hospital at the age of 92.

Mr. Morehead was born on June 4, 1892, the son of Ebe and Emma (Winter) Morehead at Albion, Nebraska and worked for the White Pine Lumber Company. In 1928 he was hired by Mt. Emily Lumber Company as logging superintendent, a position he kept until he became a forester for Boise Cascade. He served as President for the International Logging Conference Congress. In 1956 he was honored by receiving an invitation to attend on of President Eisenhower’s conferences on occupational safety. He retired in 1963.

Mr. Morehead married Goldie Phillip of Sumpter in 1920. She preceded him in death in 1933. On November 24, 1935 he married Alice MacDonald Jones of Payette, Idaho.

Mr. Morehead served for several years on the rural school board in Union County. He served on the board of the Indian Festival of Arts for several years. He became a member of the La Grande Lodge #41 AF/AM in 1916. He was also a member of the Baker Consistory Scottish Rite, Al Kader Temple and the Union County Shrine Club. He served on the Rainbow board and was a Rainbow Dad for 30 years for the La Grande Rainbow Girls. He joined the Shrine in 1920 and was a member of the committee that started the East-West Shrine Football Game. Mr. Morehead was also a member of the La Grande Elks Lodge #433, Odd Fellows and the Knife and Fork. He was a very active member of the Cove Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice of La Grande; son, Paul Bruce Morehead of Joseph; daughter Lynn Pio of Salem; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, Niece Myrna Collins of Elgin and nephew Bud Miller of La Grande and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Perlie Springer.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert Flaherty of the Union Methodist Church officiating. Committal followed at Hillcrest Cemetery.
