George Washington Barnes was born Feb 13, 1843 in Jackson County, Indiana and died July 18, 1913 at the home of his son in law, Frank Redman, of Paradise, at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 5 days. He served in the U. S. Army during the Civil War having enlisted in 1863. He was honorably discharged and crossed the Plains in the fall of 1865, settleing at Cove, Oregon. Ray William Gowey of Joseph passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 1974 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient eight days. He had been in failing health for the past six months. Minam, Wallowa County, Oregon Small Girl Drowns In River at Minam While picking flowers with playmates near the Wallowa river at Minam last Saturday, May 8, Betty Childers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Childers lost her balance and fell down the steep bank into the stream. In this city, Tuesday, May 8, 1906, John C. Eckley, aged 78 years. The deceased was born in Richland County, Ohio, and crossed the plains, coming to California in 1850. Mr. M.L. Johnson, formerly a well known figure at Lostine, died in Los Angeles, California, on January 31st. He had been married about a week when operated on for appendicitis, dying the next day. Mr. Johnson was reputed to have been a wealthy man at one time but the money went easy as it came and died with his fortune all gone.
